Traditionally, eliminating gum disease has been treated surgically by removing the diseased tissues. Although this is still an effective way of treating gum disease, new and more sophisticated procedures are used routinely today.
Bone grafts may be performed when conditions are right around key teeth. Either your own bone, banked bone or synthetic bone substitutes may be used, depending upon the situation.
Guided Tissue Regeneration of previously lost gum and bone tissue. Most techniques utilize membranes (small sheets of Gore-Tex or other resorbable materials), which are inserted over the bone defects. Bioactive gels containing growth factors may also be employed.
Guided Bone Regeneration following tooth loss can preserve the extraction “socket” or “ridge” and minimize collapse of the area. With less shrinkage a more natural-looking tooth replacement can be designed, whether it is an implant crown or a fixed bridge.
These procedures are performed under local anesthesia. Post-operative pain is often less than for more traditional forms of periodontal surgery.
